Singapore City Info

Singapore, the largest port in Southeast Asia, is an independent city-state located on the southern end of the Malay Peninsula. It has a total land mass of 714.3 square kilometers and a population of more than 5 million people. Its focal and strategic position makes this city, a business giant.

Despite being a small city, the Lion City has a booming and flourishing economy. One of its major economic contributors lies in the tourism industry. It is well known for its world-class hotels and huge shopping centers, and various recreational attractions including Sentosa, and Universal Studios.

Singapore Red Light District

With the legality of prostitution in Singapore, sex workers can offer adult services in brothels, massage parlours, and karaoke lounges. These are common in red light districts, with the government-regulated areas requiring self-declared prostitutes to carry health cards and submit to medical checks.

  • Geylang – this is the main red light district in Singapore, located on the eastern fringe of the central region of the city. Brothels openly operate on Geylang, which is also the place where sex workers legally pursue customers.
  • Orchard Tower – this is where the Four Floors of Whores is located, a dance club with young Russian ladies. Orchard Tower The rates for sex workers could reach over a $150 mark, with services delivered at the client’s hotel room. Orchard Tower is located on Orchard Road.
  • Petain Road – known as Kin Jio Kar, this is one of the least recognized legalized red light districts in the city. Located in close proximity to the City Square Shopping Mall, this is where rows of brothels can be found. This is a place for Singaporeans as well as foreigners on a tight budget.
  • Desker Road – this is one of the oldest RLDs in Singapore. The place gets active at night, with a brothel located near Mustafa Centre. Visitors can find this brothel in the alley between two rows of shop houses flanged by Rowell and Desker Road.
  • Keong Saik Road – this is one of the most popular RLDS in the city since the 1960s. Hotels, bars, and restaurants have replaced most of the brothels in the area. The remaining brothels are located near the Foong Kee Coffee Shop and are open every day from early noon to late evening.

History of the RLD

Bugis Street used to be Singapore’s best red light district. This, however, was later changed, with the crown passed to Geylang. This atmospheric area on the east coast of the city offers some of the best local food as well as great period architecture.

Petain Road, on the other hand, was named after a French military hero in the First World War, Field Marshall Henri Philippe Petain. There had been efforts to rename the street, but these were not successful. The alley parallel to Flander’s Square provides a unique side to the city’s red light district.

In the case of Keong Saik Road, it was named after Tan Keong Saik, who was a pillar of Singapore society in the 19th century. It was quite ironic that Saik Road became a notorious RLD, even though the man it was named after wanted to protect women and children. It was fully established as a red light district by the 1960s.

How to Reach the RLD

Singapore has an excellent transport system, which makes travelling to the RLD so easy. Tourists can ride the MRT, with several stations located nearby such as the Aljunied, and Paya Kebar. There is also one terminal that specifically caters to those on the district roads which is the Geylang Lorong 1 Bus Terminal in the Kallang Planning area.

For those who are planning to go to Petain Road, visitors can ride the taxi or travel by bus or train and use helpful sites like GoThere.sg to see routes to the Flanders Square. When going to Desker, there are several bus stops in the city and the nearest MRT station is the Farrer Park.

When reaching Keong Saik Road, visitors can ride the taxi and tell the driver to drop them off at Foong Kee Coffeeshop. The site, GoThere.sg, is also useful for those travelling by car, bus, or train. The nearest MRT station, meanwhile, is the Outram Park.

Safety Information

Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world, with low crime levels. In the main red light district, Geylang, female tourists can walk safely around the area. It is not advisable, however, to walk with sexy clothing with mismatched colors. Prostitutes are known to have a reputation for having a bad taste in fashion. Those who want to stay away from the unwanted attention need to avoid walking alone through the ‘Lorongs’ in Geylang.

In the connecting alleys of the Lorong, there are even more prostitutes of different nationalities.

Clients can find girls from Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, with some workers from Sri Lanka. There is also a back street dedicated to Indians, with the ladies sitting on wooden chairs where they take their clients. Sex services usually range from S$30 to S$100.

Window Prostitution

There are several side streets in Geylang called Lorong. Those who choose to walk down the side streets can peek into brothels and see Asian girls sitting behind glass windows. For clients who cannot choose from those girls, the manager can order ladies from another brothel, depending on the client’s request. Short time session can cost for S$100 to S$150.

Singapore Clubs and Brothels

The brothels in the city are located on the side of even numbered Lorongs between 4 and 20. Many brothels in the area look like residential houses but are easy to find. Some have red numbers, with an assigned person standing outside trying to entice potential clients. Meanwhile, others have large, bright numbers that seem like bitty casinos.

On Keong Saik Road, there are two remaining brothels located alongside the Foong Kee Coffeeshop. The brothels located in the area work in the same way as the ones in the 60s, offering a nostalgic affair for more established clients. Adult services cost about S$30 to S$120, with some only charging S$30 to S$70.
